Breast Reduction

Alleviate discomfort and achieve a breast size more proportional to your physique

BOOK TREATMENT

How It Works

A breast reduction is a procedure that makes heavy, droopy breasts smaller, lighter and more lifted. People with heavy breasts often have neck, shoulder or back pain due to the size of their breasts. They may also have irritation of the skin under their breasts due to the skin rubbing together and the excess moisture. Another common complaint is that the heavy breasts interfere with the ability to perform sports or other activities. Bras that fit comfortably and are supportive are often difficult to find.

The procedure removes the excess breast tissue and skin and repositions the nipple higher on the breast so that it is pointing forward instead of downward, exactly like a breast lift (mastopexy). The 2 most common incisions made for a breast reduction are the “lollipop” technique which goes around the areola like a circle and then vertically below the areola (vertical scar), or the “anchor” technique, which goes around the areola, then a vertical incision, followed by an incision under the breast (Wise pattern). The incisions are closed with dissolving sutures.

FAQ's

  • What can I expect recovery from a breast reduction to be like?

Most patients take 4 weeks off from work to allow for recovery. If you do light office work, you may be able to return as early as 2 weeks. You can resume light activities the day after surgery, but avoid activities that require forceful movements of the arms for 4 weeks.

  • Can a breast reduction be covered by Medicare?

Medicare needs to consider your procedure medically necessary for it to be covered. This means that if the procedure is being done for cosmetic reasons, Medicare won’t cover it. There are a few common reasons you might need a breast reduction, including shoulder or back pain from heavy breasts. Medicare also stipulates patients have to be within a certain weight range and have enough breast tissue to meet their criteria. A consultation with Dr. Husain can be determine if your procedure would be covered by Medicare.

  • Should I wait and get a breast reduction after having kids?

Pregnancy can cause the breasts to undergo many changes, so it’s helpful to talk with Dr. Husain about the possibility of becoming pregnant after breast reduction surgery. If you plan to become pregnant, after breast reduction surgery, your breasts may grow large and heavy again due to the effect of hormones, possibly causing you to need the surgery again. In some cases, it may also affect the ability to breastfeed. These are good questions to discuss during your consultation.
