How It Works
If you are looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles or act early and prevent them from forming, then neuromodulator injections may be a great option for you.
Surprise, sadness, anger, and laughter; our faces show all kinds of emotions. But over time all these emotions can leave us looking older than our years. Repeated contraction of facial muscles can lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles in the forehead, brow, around the eyes, and the mouth. These dynamic lines can become deeper and more pronounced as we age. Neuromodulators such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, Nuceiva and Dysport work to temporarily relax the muscles that cause these wrinkles, resulting in a smooth soft appearance.
What are Neuromodulators and how do they work?
A neuromodulator is a naturally occurring toxin called botulinum toxin type A. Used in small amounts, it is injected into the muscles of the face that cause wrinkles. Once injected the neuromodulators block nerve impulses preventing the muscles from contracting and forming wrinkles.
What areas of the face can be treated with neuromodulators?
Neuromodulators such as Botox Cosmetic and Nucevia have been FDA approved to treat:
- Frown lines between the eyebrows
- Vertical forehead lines
- Lines around the eyes known as crow’s feet
They have also been successful in off-label uses for treating:
- lines around the mouth
- rough chin texture also called ‘cobblestone’ chin
- bunny lines on the nose
- platysma muscles (neck bands)
- gummy smile
- masseter injections to relieve teeth grinding/ excessive clenching
BOTOX® may also be used to treat Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) in the underarms, this procedure is covered by most insurance companies.

When can you begin to see results and how long will it last?
Both neuromodulators carried at Allura work in the same way, resulting in relaxation of facial muscles. The onset of action of these products begins around day 3 to 5 with maximum results 14 days after injection. In general Injections last 3-4 months depending on how much product is used and a number of other unique factors. It is common for first time users to see effects wearing off at three months or possibly sooner, but results typically last longer after the second injection. When used to reduce excessive sweating, results typically last 6 to 9 months, and sometimes more.

When is the best time to begin neurotoxin injections?
Some patients choose begin injections at a younger age or at the first signs of a line forming, in order to prevent lines from forming and becoming deep. This method results in less product being needed to yield results, as lines are being prevented.
Some patients choose to begin injections later in life when lines and wrinkles are becoming bothersome. This is still a very effective option, the only difference is that more product may be needed to yield results as deep lines that have been present for a longer period of time may be more difficult to fully eliminate.

What is recovery like?
There is little to no downtime after neuromodulator injections. Some patients choose to receive their injections at lunch and return to work that same day. For a few hours or a day or two, there may be light redness at the injection sites. With any injection bruising is always a possibility, steps can be taken to reduce the chances or severity of a bruise.
