How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal is a safe and effective way to reduce unwanted hair on the face and body. It works by using focused light energy to target and disable hair follicles, leading to smoother skin and lasting results. If you’re tired of shaving, waxing, or dealing with ingrown hairs, laser hair removal offers a long-term solution that fits into your lifestyle.
What is Laser Hair removal?

The treatment is suitable for both men and women who want to manage hair growth in areas such as:

  • Face and neck
  • Underarms
  • Arms and legs
  • Back and chest
  • Bikini line and Brazilian area

The goal isn’t perfection—it’s freedom from constant maintenance and the confidence that comes with it.

How does it Work?

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair. The laser emits light energy absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft. This energy converts to heat, which damages the follicle and slows future growth without harming the surrounding skin.

The technology is most effective when there’s contrast between hair and skin tone—dark hair on lighter skin gives the best results. However, modern diode lasers can be adjusted to safely treat a range of skin tones.
Here’s how the process works:

  1. The laser’s cooling tip or system protects your skin during treatment.
  2. The laser pulses, targeting multiple hairs in a fraction of a second.
  3. Treated hairs gradually shed over the following days.
  4. Repeated sessions catch hairs in their active growth phase, leading to progressive reduction.

You may feel a brief snapping sensation, similar to an elastic band on the skin, but most clients tolerate it well.

Is Laser Hair Removal Right for You?

Laser hair removal is ideal if you have lighter skin and darker hair. That’s because the laser targets pigment, making it easier to distinguish between skin and hair.

You might be a good candidate if:

  • You have dark hair and fair to medium skin
  • You want to reduce frequent shaving, waxing, or irritation
  • You have recurring ingrown hairs or razor burn
  • You’re looking for a more lasting result than waxing

However, laser hair removal is less effective on light blonde, red, or white hair due to low pigment levels. For those hair types, electrolysis is a better permanent option. Before treatment, we’ll review your skin type, hair color, and medical history to ensure it’s safe and effective for you.

Laser Hair Removal is Not a Permanent Solution

Laser hair removal significantly reduces hair growth, but it isn’t considered permanent. Most clients experience about an 80% reduction in treated areas.

Hair may regrow due to hormonal changes, genetics, or other factors. Maintenance sessions once or twice a year help preserve smooth results.

You can expect:

  • Long-lasting smoothness
  • Finer, lighter regrowth if it occurs
  • Minimal upkeep compared to shaving or waxing

We prefer to under-promise and over-deliver. Our approach is transparent: we’ll tell you what’s realistic for your skin and hair type so you know exactly what to expect.

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost?

Pricing depends on the size of the area treated. Smaller areas like the upper lip or toes cost less than larger ones like the legs or back.

Typical pricing:

  • Small areas: $85–$115 per session
  • Medium areas: $200–$250 per session
  • Large areas: up to $385 per session

Most clients need six sessions, spaced about four to eight weeks apart, to achieve the best results. A consultation fee of $75 plus tax applies for new clients. This ensures your treatment plan is safe, customized, and medically sound. Packages and maintenance options are available, and sessions never expire—you can use them when you’re ready.

Our Process at Allura Clinics

We follow a structured process to ensure safe and effective results.

  1. Consultation:
Your journey begins with a consultation where we assess your goals, skin type, and medical history. We’ll determine whether you’re a suitable candidate and create a personalized plan.

  2. Treatment Plan:
If eligible, you’ll be scheduled for your first session. In some cases, treatment can start the same day.

  3. Series of Treatments:
You’ll typically undergo 6 to 12 sessions. Each session targets new hair growth cycles to ensure optimal reduction.

  4. Maintenance:
Most clients return for touch-ups once or twice a year. Winter is often the best time since reduced sun exposure allows for higher laser settings and better contrast between skin and hair.

We use diode laser technology, which is more effective and requires fewer sessions than IPL systems used at some clinics.

Preparation & Recovery

Preparation

Proper preparation helps you get the best results and avoid side effects.

  • Before your session:
  • Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners for 4 weeks.
  • Stop using retinol, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid one week prior.
  • Discontinue antibiotics or steroids that cause photosensitivity for at least two weeks before treatment.
  • Do not wax, tweeze, or use depilatory creams for six weeks before treatment.
  • Shave the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment.

The general rule: avoid anything that irritates or sensitizes your skin before treatment.

Recovery

There’s no downtime after laser hair removal, but gentle care supports optimal healing.

  • Redness or mild bumps may appear for a few hours—this is normal.
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, or workouts for 24 hours.
  • Stay out of the sun for at least 4 weeks post-treatment.
  • Apply SPF daily to treated areas.
  • Avoid retinol, exfoliants, and acids for 2–3 days.

If you experience temporary redness, cool compresses can help soothe the skin. Your provider will guide you on when to book your next session—usually in 4 to 8 weeks.
