Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Get rid of excess skin, for a slimmer curvier waistline
An abdominoplasty is a procedure that reshapes the abdomen, back and flanks to create a slimmer curvier torso. After pregnancy or weight loss, the abdomen may have areas of excess fat or skin which may make it difficult for clothes to fit properly. It is performed with a combination of liposuction of the excess fat, removal of the excess skin and tightening of the abdominal muscles.
The liposuction removes the excess fat at the front of the abdomen, the sides (“love handles”) and the back. This gives a curvier waist. The excess skin is removed though a horizontal incision just above the pubic area. The muscles is tightened with a series of sutures to make the tummy flatter. The belly button usually needs to be repositioned as well. Before closing the incision with dissolving sutures, a drain is left under the skin to remove excess fluid during the first few days after the surgery.
If there is a lot of excess skin, for example, if someone has lost a tremendous amount of weight, then the incision is usually an upside-down T-shape (fleur-de-lys), with a horizontal incision above the pubis combined with a vertical incision running down the centre of the abdomen.
There are many reasons to have excess fat, lax excess skin, or weak separated abdominal muscles. These may include
Diet and exercise are normally recommended to reduce fat and improve muscle tone, however, excess skin, stubborn pockets of fat, and stretched abdominal muscles may require surgical correction. 3D TOOLYou will have pain medication to help manage discomfort after your surgery. It is best to have help at home for the first day or two after your surgery. For the first few days home you will most likely have difficulty bending, lifting, or standing for long periods of time, this is why having someone to help out around the house is ideal.
Let your discomfort be your guide, it is best to get up periodically and walk around to promote good blood flow after surgery. Take breaks as needed and do not push yourself. After the first week you may resume light daily activity such as cooking, going for walks, and caring for yourself. You must avoid heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling for one month after surgery, and can resume more intense physical activity at the guidance of Dr. Husain after your one month appointment. Typically you will be fully healed six weeks after your tummy tuck surgery.
Yes.
Traditional Abdominoplasty in which excess skin is removed and pulled down with an incision across the lower abdominal area, the incision typically runs from hipbone to hipbone.
Mini Abdominoplasty is ideal for those with a small localized area of loose skin in the lower center of the abdomen only.
Pregnancy can lead to sagging skin and separation of the abdominal muscles. Therefore, becoming pregnant could very well undo the results from the procedure. We strongly recommend to our patients to wait for their surgery until they are certain that they do not want to have any more children.
