Neck Liposuction

BOOK TREATMENT

How It Works

Neck liposuction is performed to reduce fat under the chin and improve the contour of the jawline and neck. Ideal candidates for liposuction are those who have localized deposits of fat that is resistant to diet or exercise. This procedure is ideally performed in someone with firm neck skin, otherwise there is a risk of the skin sagging afterwards. If the skin requires tightening, additional procedures may be necessary.

During the procedure, the area is first injected with a solution which numbs the area and reduces bleeding. Then, a small skin incision (about 3-4 mm in length) is made for the insertion of the liposuction cannula. A small cannula is then passed through the incision, and passed back and forth through the area in order to loosen and suck out the fat. Once the procedure is completed, the incision is closed with one suture, and a strap or bandage is then used to apply compression over the treated area.

Neck liposuction is customized for every patient, depending on their needs, and can be performed alone or in combination with other surgical procedures.

FAQ's

  • What should I expect after getting liposuction?

You will be provided a compression garment to wear around the neck. It’s important to wear these diligently, as they help to reduce swelling and contour the neckline. During the first few days after the procedure, you can typically expect moderate discomfort. You should plan to limit intense physical activity for 2-3 weeks.

  • Will liposuction leave scars?

Because the cannula used to remove fat during liposuction is so small this allows the incision to remain small as well. Once healed the scar from liposuction is virtually undetectable if well cared for.

  • How long does swelling in the neck last?

Swelling is expected with liposuction, the majority of the swelling will occur in the first 1-2 weeks and reduce gradually after this. The compression garment will help to minimize swelling. Changes will be seen over a period of three months after the procedure as swelling dissipates and tissues settle.

  • Who is an ideal candidate for neck liposuction?

Ideal candidates for neck liposuction are individuals with good skin elasticity and localized fat deposits in the neck area. They should have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the procedure. Neck liposuction is most effective for those who wish to address excess fat in the neck, rather than significant skin laxity or sagging, which may require a different approach, such as a neck lift.

  • Can neck liposuction address a double chin?

Yes, neck liposuction is an effective solution for reducing a double chin caused by excess fat accumulation. By removing the unwanted fat deposits, this procedure can create a more defined and contoured jawline.

  • How is neck liposuction different from a neck lift?

Neck liposuction and a neck lift are two distinct procedures that target different concerns. Neck liposuction primarily focuses on removing excess fat from the neck area to improve contours. In contrast, a neck lift addresses sagging skin, loose muscles, and excess skin in the neck and jowl region.

These procedures are often combined for comprehensive rejuvenation, with liposuction addressing fat deposits and a neck lift addressing skin and muscle laxity.

  • Is there an age limit for neck liposuction?

There is no strict age limit for neck liposuction. However, age can be a significant factor in determining candidacy.

Candidates should have sufficient skin elasticity to achieve optimal results. Skin elasticity naturally decreases with age, so older individuals may need to be evaluated more carefully to ensure they are suitable candidates for the procedure.

  • What are the risks associated with neck liposuction?

Like any surgical procedure, neck liposuction carries certain risks and potential complications.

    • These may include:
    • Bruising and swelling
    • Numbness or altered sensation in the treatment area
    • Irregular contours
    • Infection (rare)
    • Nerve damage (very rare)

It’s essential to discuss these risks with your surgeon during your consultation and follow all pre and post-operative instructions to minimize potential complications.

  • How should I prepare for neck liposuction surgery?

Preparation for neck liposuction involves several key steps, including:

    • Stopping certain medications or supplements that can increase the risk of bleeding, as recommended by your surgeon
    • Arranging for post-surgery care, including transportation to and from the surgical facility
    • Following specific instructions regarding fasting before the procedure
    • Ensuring you have a comfortable recovery space set up at home, with necessary supplies and support in place

Adhering to your surgeon’s pre-operative guidelines is crucial to ensure a safe and successful surgery.

  • What is the typical downtime after neck liposuction?

The downtime following neck liposuction can vary from person to person. Most patients can expect to return to work and normal daily activities within a week after the procedure. However, it’s essential to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for a few weeks to allow for proper healing and minimize swelling.

  • Will neck liposuction improve skin laxity?

Neck liposuction primarily targets excess fat, and it doesn’t inherently improve skin laxity. If you have loose or sagging skin in addition to excess fat, your surgeon may recommend combining neck liposuction with a neck lift. A neck lift can address skin and muscle laxity, creating a more comprehensive improvement in neck contour.

  • Can neck liposuction be combined with other procedures?

Yes, neck liposuction is often combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures to achieve a more comprehensive and harmonious result. Common combination procedures include facelifts, chin augmentation, and eyelid surgery. Combining procedures can address multiple aspects of facial aging, ensuring a balanced and rejuvenated appearance.
