The Importance of Sunscreen
If we’ve heard it once, we’ve heard it at least a thousand times:
“Put on sunscreen before you go outside.”
Your parents said it to you, your spouses have said it to you, and if you’re old enough, your kids have said it to you. Sunscreen is important!
Sunscreen is a combination of ingredients that work together to prevent UVA and UVB rays from the sun from penetrating our skin. UVB causes sunburn, while UVA causes premature aging, and increases your chance of skin cancer.
SPF is an acronym meaning Sun Protection Factor. Here’s the math: If it takes your unprotected skin 15 minutes to burn, using an SPF 15 sunscreen can theoretically increase that time by 15, making it 3 hours and 45 minutes before your skin starts to burn.
According to information from The Skin Cancer Foundation, you should apply sunscreen about 30 minutes before you go outside. After that, you should reapply every 2 hours, or after swimming or sweating.
